Myrtus Communis
Myrtus Communis , is an evergreen plant you can find in nature in sourthern Europe, north Africa, part of Asia and India.
Myrtus communis is a compact shrub with dark green and very scented foliage. It blooms in Sprintime with copious white or very light pink flowers. It can have even a second blooming in late Summer, at the end of August.
From November to January , the plant has small berries with a diameter of 1 cm and dark red color. It is possible even find plants with white berries. From those berries it is produced the famous Sardinian liquor.
Myrtus prefers drained and fertile soils, resists to different climate conditions (dryness, saltiness, etc) but has a medium resistance to frost (few degrees below zero). It prefers full sun exposure.
Propagation is by seeds (usually in December / January) and by cuttings. In normal condition, the plant is not subject to pests or diseases.
It is appreciated to create flower borders, shrubs , low maintenance borders in cities and informal mediterranean gardens.
